Tales of the Trojan Wars

A vivid, dramatic retelling of how the Trojan War began, how the Greeks were gathered, how Achilles killed Hector and met his own fate, how Troy fell and how Odysseus came home. Katy's narrative brings the old texts alive and paints a coherent picture of the over-arching story, helping students fit what they already know into context. It is an opportunity to open students up to an appreciation of Homer's epic poems as a gripping story and an exploration of war and its terrible consequences. Without the need to be didactic, the performance illustrates the form of oral narrative: the purpose of repetition, alliteration, epithets and similes. It also demonstrates how a story shifts in the telling, how each narrator makes it his own whilst transmitting the essential action and character.
"Excellent! Engaged the children's interest from the start... all ability and age ranges benefitted. Both children and teachers want a repeat visit as soon as possible" Classics teacher, Bishopsgate School
"The girls were fascinated by the medium of storytelling and found the experience very refreshing. The empathy they were encouraged to develop with the characters led on to some interesting discussions and creative work, while their knowledge of the myths was consolidated and widened. This fits in very well with the Oxford Latin Course Book 1" Classics teacher, Wycombe Abbey
The performance falls into two 40min halves and can be supplemented with exercises to involve the students. Katy has a first in Classics from Oxford and is familiar with a wide range of Greek myth and history which can be tailored to meet your needs. For example, she has coordinated a group performance of myths about the gods and has retold stories from Herodotos. Please contact Katy for more details
